Essential Ukulele Accessories: What You Really Need to Get Started 🎶

When you’re new to the ukulele, the world of gear can feel overwhelming. Do you really need all those gadgets? The good news is, you only need a few of simple, affordable accessories to set yourself up for success. These will keep your instrument safe, help you stay in tune, and most importantly — make it easier (and more fun!) to practise.

1. Ukulele Stand or Wall Hanger

One of the best ways to make sure you actually practise is to keep your ukulele visible and within reach. If it’s tucked away in its case under the bed, you’ll probably forget about it.

  • Wall hangers: I got mine from Gear4Music and they’ve worked brilliantly.

  • Stands: Collapsible stands are handy for travel, but some don’t have much grip. Anti-slip stands are sturdier, though some don’t fold away. Think about what matters most for you.

✨ The main thing is to have your ukulele out where you’ll be inspired to pick it up!

2. Ukulele Tuner

A tuner is essential — even the best players don’t tune by ear alone all the time. A clip-on tuner is inexpensive and very easy to use. In my course you’ll find a handout and a video to guide you through tuning, but having your own tuner makes life so much simpler.

You  can also use a tuning app on your phone but the clip-on tuner is great and means you don’t have to rely on your phone.

3. Ukulele Case

Whether you’re taking your ukulele to class, on holiday, or just want to keep it dust-free at home, a case is a must-have.

  • Gig bags (soft padded cases) are lightweight and perfect for most beginners.  Get one with straps so you can put it on your back if you are walking or on your bike!

  • Hard cases offer more protection if you’re travelling a lot.

💡 These three accessories — stand or hanger, tuner, and case — are really all you need to get started. Later on you might experiment with extras like straps, picks, or capos, but you don’t need those on day one.

Getting the basics in place makes learning ukulele so much smoother. Once you’ve got your stand or hanger, tuner, and case, you’re ready to go!
