When there is war…

This poem was inspired by Ukranian Jewellery Maker Tanya Kolyada.

May While we were looking forward to restrictions relaxing and life becoming more normal again, now we have the horror of war in Ukraine.

It’s hard to know what to do think and what to do.  And yet we must go on and live as best we can. This poem was inspired by Ukranian Jewellery Maker Tanya Kolyada.

Last week Tanya was leading a normal life enjoying her work and happy times with her family and now their beautiful city of Kyiv is being destroyed all around them. Tanya is sharing their experiences on instagram. If you want, you can support her by buying some of her jewellery although obviously she can’t post anything out at the moment.

Inspired by Tanya’s situation, this poem came to me one morning. May we see peace soon and and end to suffering in Ukraine.

You stop me from walking

my little girl to school

hand in hand we should be,

happy, free.

Now she clings to me with fear,

watching closely in case I

disappear.

I work from home.

But what’s the point?

Everytime I nearly get

in the zone

something makes me

jump

and my hands tremble

and I want to climb

into bed under the covers

and stay there until

it’s all over.

But she is looking at me.

She needs me strong

and whole.

And so I smile

and say

‘Honey let’s play

a game’.

When there is war

I lose my life,

my identity.

my family,

my friends,

my home,

my city.

When there is war

the beauty I see in the world

starts to fade.

Needless destruction

batters away at my heart.

Starts to dim

my light of hope.

When there is war

my fear can turn

to bitterness

to anger

to revenge.

When there is war

How can I stay connected in love?

Even though deep

down I know

I am love.

Nothing makes sense

Everything is upside down.

When there is war

Where can I go?

How can I be?

When there is war

What will you do?

Will you stand by watching quietly

or do what you can

to help me?
